According to news from Evening Standard, Chelsea Supporters’ Trust has slammed the club’s decision to form the new ‘European Super League’. They have labelled this move as unforgivable as the news has sent ripples across European football due to the nature of it.
On Sunday, 12 elite European clubs passed the proposal of a new ‘European Super League’. The new tournament will be a closed affair with its 12 founding members and a few other clubs.
There will be no other teams other than the 20 current participants and that is what has irked the footballing community.
Among the clubs to be its founding members, Chelsea are accompanied by 5 other Premier League clubs namely Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Manchester City and United.
The rest of the spots are occupied by Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico, Juventus, Inter and AC Milan. Bayern and PSG are the only two big clubs who have not agreed to the same.
This move comes as a huge blow to football as we know it, with most of the elite clubs just creating their own league to play each other and generate more money. Chelsea Supporters’ Trust has provided a statement on the same.
“They say expect the unexpected, but today the Chelsea Supporters’ Trust (CST), our members and football supporters across the world have experienced the ultimate betrayal.
This is a decision of greed to line the pockets of those at the top and it has been made with no consideration for the loyal supporters, our history, our future of the future of football in this country.
It is likely that this proposal with never come into existence, however, it speaks volumes that [Chelsea] are prepared to risk our existence in the Premier League and the FA Cup. This is unforgivable. Enough is enough.”
This new ‘Super League’ is expected to start soon with the club confirming the same. Pundits like Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand have blasted the decision, as have fans.
UEFA in a joint statement with the governing bodies of football in each country have made their point clear too in a bid to stop this from happening. It remains to be seen as to how this boils up given the reaction it has provoked from the football fraternity.
