In a stunning bit of news from Daily Mail, several elite European clubs including Chelsea, have agreed to form a breakaway European Super League. It has been said that five Premier League clubs Manchester United and City, Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool and Chelsea have opted to form this exclusive league.
This move to create a closed league involving only the founding clubs is said to be the idea of Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and the American owners of the Premier League clubs.
Conglomerate JP Morgan is said to be financing the whole deal that would see the elite clubs of Europe form a closed league.
All this comes to light just as UEFA are set to announce some reforms to the Champions League. The new ‘Super League’ will likely have around 15-18 teams with 12 teams signing the initial deal.
Six of them are the traditional heavyweights from the Premier League. Then there are Real Madrid, Atletico, Barcelona, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan.
This is a very complex situation, with the Premier League clubs needing permission from their governing body to participate in any breakaway league.
That request is unlikely to get approved, meaning that the teams will not participate in the league and the players also not being allowed to participate in any of the UEFA or FIFA competitions.
The ‘Super League’ could well be a milestone decision in European football with the big clubs wanting more money and control in the Champions League.
In the event that this sees the light of the day, it would be catastrophic due to the closed nature of the league and top players not featuring anywhere else but this competition.
