Boost for Chelsea as 18-year-old French wonderkid rejects new contract offer

Transfer News: Chelsea linked Eduardo Camavinga rejects new Rennes contract

According to transfer news from Express, Chelsea have received a bit of a boost in their pursuit of Eduardo Camavinga. The Rennes wonderkid is said to have rejected a new contract with the club amidst links to Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid.

The 18-year-old defensive midfielder burst onto the scenes in 2019 and enjoyed a spectacular season with Rennes, helping them qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

However, the Ligue 1 outfit has struggled to perform at the same level this term. And following the sacking of manager Julian Stephan, who played a crucial role in Camavinga’s rise at the club, the midfielder is now considering his future at the club.

Camavinga is one of France’s finest young talents

The Blues have a packed midfield department as things stand, with N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic vying for the starting spots while Billy Gilmour provides an option from the bench.

Nonetheless, looking at fresh options isn’t entirely a bad idea. His agent, Jonathan Barnett, has spoken about how he sees Camavinga playing in the Premier League.

“Camavinga can play next year in the Premier League. He is that good. Whether he will or not, I don’t know. His background has been tough if you know what he went through as a refugee and the burning of his home (in Rennes).

But his character is amazingly strong. He is not your average 18-year-old. Playing in front of 100,000 people is not going to scare him. He’s a lovely boy and I think he’s going to be a superstar.”

Camavinga’s current deal expires in June 2022. This means he can leave Rennes on a free transfer next summer. The prospect of landing a potential superstar for nothing has attracted attention from a number of top sides across the continent, including Chelsea.

Now that he is set to reject the new contract offer, it gives Chelsea a chance to snap up one of Europe’s best emerging talents.

It will be a difficult task to get Camavinga especially with the likes of United and Real Madrid also after the player. The Blues may yet have to shell out decent money for a player who wants to leave the club in fears that they will miss out on European football next season.
