Chelsea the highest spenders on agent fees in the Premier League

According to news from Sky Sports, Chelsea were revealed to be the highest spenders on agent fees this season. The Blues spent £35.2m on agents of various players as they embarked on a transfer splurge last summer.

The sum was quite a bit more than what they paid in 2019. Chelsea spent a staggering £272m (including agent fees) on new arrivals. In came the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech and Edouard Mendy for big chunks of money. There were also the likes of Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr arriving on a free.

Apparently, they shelled out that amount on 69 transactions by the agents with 23 outgoings. The next highest spenders were Manchester City at £30.2m. United were not far behind as they shelled out £29.8m.

The other big clubs followed suit, with Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal taking the next three places. Newcastle were surprisingly among the top ten with £11.3m. Burnley though were the lowest spenders on agent fees with £4.5m.

It’s no surprise to see Chelsea spend that much on just agents given the club added a number of players. There were also the usual loan deals and sales. Nonetheless, Chelsea will very likely go after some new signings in a bid to help Thomas Tuchel.
