According to news from Sky Sports, Boris Johnson has promised to take all measures to stop the European Super League of which Chelsea is a part. The British Prime Minister has opened up on the ESL issue and held talks with officials and fans regarding the same.
A landmark decision was made on Sunday, with the elite clubs of Europe proposing to form the ESL – a closed league involving those elite clubs in a bid to generate more revenue to combat the losses incurred during the pandemic. Chelsea are among the 12 founding members of the ESL, which involves the big Premier League clubs as well as the top sides from Italy and Spain.
However, the decision has been met with severe backlash from all corners of the football fraternity. The graveness of the situation can be understood by the fact that Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson has decided to fight the issue.
Following Tuesday’s talks, a Number 10 statement said:
“The prime minister confirmed the government will not stand by while a small handful of owners create a closed shop. He was clear that no action is off the table and the government is exploring every possibility, including legislative options, to ensure these proposals are stopped.”
With such a league threatening to destroy the very fabric of European football, it is no surprise that so many important figures have joined the battle against it. While the Prime Minister has spoken about measures, it is still unclear as to what exactly will be done at this point.
