A report by Daily Star mentions that Chelsea are willing to come up with a wage package that would be ‘agreeable’ to David Alaba and are interested in a summer transfer for the Bayern Munich star.
The Austrian defender refused to sign a contract extension with the German side. That means his departure from Bayern in the summer transfer window is highly likely.
Spain has been a likely destination for the 28-year-old, with Real Madrid and Barcelona both in the running. But the two clubs are not likely to offer the £400,000-a-week salary he and his Israeli super agent, Pini Zahavi, demand.
Both the clubs are suffering from the financial after-effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. And this has alerted the Premier League clubs, with Chelsea prepared to offer the wages demanded by him. (h/t Daily Star)
Manchester City are also linked with a move for the Austrian, and while they would not offer the aforementioned wages due to the Etihad pay-structure, their bonus payments in the contract can make up for it.
Alaba is one of the finest defenders in the world who is capable of playing in a variety of positions. He can play as a left-back, a centre-back, and a defensive midfielder.
That would be like killing 3 birds with one stone for the Blues who would strengthen multiple places in their squad with his signing. Nevertheless, it would not be an easy battle if they did want to sign him.
Manchester City could prove to be tough competitors. But the report states that Thomas Tuchel is an admirer of the player and it is pretty obvious that Alaba will be a signing that the fanbase would also be happy with.
