Transfer News: Chelsea among several clubs to make an offer to Sergio Aguero

According to transfer news from Foot Mercato (h/t Daily Star), Chelsea have also entered the race to sign Sergio Aguero next season. The Manchester City striker is set to call time on his stay at the club after 10 years and that has led to a whole host of clubs such as Manchester United, PSG and Inter Milan keen on his services.

Chelsea have a very weird dilemma regarding their forward options. The club has three strikers and each comes with its own problem.

New signing Timo Werner has failed to nail a starting spot due to his struggles in front of goal. Tammy Abraham hasn’t featured much due to injury but it does not look like the club see him as their main option.

Lastly, there is Olivier Giroud, who despite showing quality, is 34 years of age. That has led to Thomas Tuchel tinkering with the side and stumbling upon playing Kai Havertz as a false-nine. While that has worked well for the player, Chelsea could really do with a prolific goal-getter.

On the up, Aguero may just seem like the perfect transfer for Chelsea. The man is 4th in the list of Premier League’s all-time top scorers and City’s leading scorer too.

However, the problem starts with the fact that this is not the same player that scored that historic goal against QPR in 2012.

He is 32 and will be 33 when the next season starts. While age isn’t an issue, it’s the fact that injuries have taken a toll on him and the last few seasons have seen his participation on scant levels.

Aguero is a Premier League legend by all means but Chelsea would be the wiser lot to invest in a striker who can serve them for the next 5-6 years.
