Revealed: The two positions that Chelsea boss Tuchel wants to strengthen in the summer

Thomas Tuchel eyeing a new striker and centre-back at Chelsea

According to Christian Falk of BILD (via Sport Witness h/t Daily Star), Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has his sights set on signing a new centre-back and a centre-forward in the summer transfer window.

The German tactician took over the reins of the club in January and has done a splendid job so far. Under Tuchel, Chelsea are eleven games unbeaten in all competitions and are strong contenders to finish in the Premier League top four.

Chelsea are 11 games unbeaten under Tuchel

The ex-PSG boss has done well to get the best out of the squad he has inherited. But, as is the case with any manager, Tuchel wants to build a roster in his own image and has his eyes on two particular positions that he wants to strengthen before next season.

The report claims that the German tactician is intent on bringing in a new centre-back as well as a centre-forward in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The need for a centre-back is understandable considering that Thiago Silva, despite the impact he has made, is nearing the final stages of his career. Captain Cesar Azpilicueta is also into his thirties and needs to be slowly phased out as well.

Thiago Silva will soon turn 37

And, with Fikayo Tomori’s future uncertain, as he continues his loan spell at AC Milan, signing another top-quality centre-half would be sensible from Chelsea’s point of view.

As far as the centre-forward position is concerned, Olivier Giroud continues to produce the goods each time he is called upon but at 34 cannot be the first-choice for a team aiming to win titles.

Timo Werner, meanwhile, seems to have found his home in a slightly more withdrawn role in Tuchel’s new system while Tammy Abraham hasn’t had the best of starts to life under the new boss.

Adding another top-class marksman – Erling Haaland has been heavily linked with a move to the Bridge, could, thus, prove to be a masterstroke as Tuchel looks to lead Chelsea into a successful period.

It remains to be seen if the board is prepared to back the new manager in the market.
