“I trust him”: Thomas Tuchel confident this Chelsea star can excel in a new role

Thomas Tuchel confident that Kai Havertz can play as a forward

According to Daily Mail, Thomas Tuchel believes that Kai Havertz can flourish as a number nine for Chelsea. Havertz is technically an attacking midfielder but has occasionally been used higher up the pitch during his career.

Chelsea signed Havertz on the back of a splendid season he had at Bayer Leverkusen. However, Frank Lampard failed to get the best out of him as a midfielder.

After Thomas Tuchel took over, Havertz was gradually eased into the team. Over the last two games, he has been tried out as a false nine and safe to say, he has done much better in that role.

Kai Havertz looked good in the No.9 role for Chelsea against Leeds

Speaking post the Leeds United draw, Tuchel felt confident about Havertz playing in a more advanced role and leading the line as a false nine.

“It was pretty much the same role that he (Havertz) had against Everton. I think that Kai feels very comfortable in high positions. I feel he is very comfortable to go to drop in to half-spaces from the high position, to turn and drive with the ball and use his speed. But he also arrives very naturally in the box and the six-yard box, to finish our attacks.

“He’s comfortable in finishing, he’s strong in finishing. He can clearly play as a No 9, he can play as a half-striker or as a winger. These are his positions and today we used him as a number nine and I’m happy. It’s a position where he feels comfortable and I trust him in this position.’

Havertz did get some chances in the last few games to score but failed to take them. His effort against Everton was chalked as a Ben Godfrey own goal while Illan Meslier did well to thwart his attempts on goal against Leeds.

It is now 12 games that Chelsea are unbeaten in with their draw against Leeds United. While goals have been hard to come by, they have been very tight at the back.
