In an interview with Premier League Productions (h/t football.london), Premier League CEO Richard Masters talked about his hopes of seeing fans attend the final two gameweeks this season, which comes as good news for Chelsea.
A ruling by the government last month would allow fans to attend sporting events from May 17. The last round of Premier League fixtures take place on the 23rd of May.
And so, according to the blueprint, 10,000 fans would be allowed into the stadium for those fixtures. But that would surely be something that could put away sides in a disadvantageous position.
To fix that, Masters says that Premier League are set to shift a round of fixtures to the final mid-week of the league season. This would allow teams that played away on May 23rd a chance to end the season in front of their home fans.
“The Government’s roadmap is really welcome because it sets out a plan for a return of supporters, so hopefully the final two fixtures of our season will have up to 10,000 supporters in them all.”
This ruling impacts the Blues as they are scheduled to take on Aston Villa on the penultimate matchday. The set of fixtures that would be postponed, however, are yet to be announced.
Thomas Tuchel has rejuvenated Chelsea ever since he took over the helm in January after Frank Lampard’s sacking. The club is unbeaten in all 12 games he has managed so far.
And while they drew against Leeds United on Saturday, Chelsea are still in a strong position to end the season in 4th place to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Their focus, now, would be on finishing the job against Atletico Madrid this mid-week. The Blues have a 1-0 aggregate lead and would be hoping to make the quarter-finals.
