According to Daily Mail, Frank Lampard wanted to sign Wojciech Szczesny last summer before Chelsea ultimately settled for Edouard Mendy. The former manager wanted to bring in the Juventus keeper in a bid to replace the error-prone Kepa.
However, it has been said that Szczesny is well settled in Turin and would not have fancied a move to Chelsea due to his previous alliance with rivals Arsenal. Nonetheless, it has turned out all good for the Blues as Mendy has become a huge asset.
Prior to Mendy’s signing, the spot between the posts was a huge concern for Chelsea. Having let go of Thibaut Courtois, Chelsea signed Kepa from Athletic Bilbao. However, in the first two seasons at the club, Kepa hardly performed anywhere close to the levels expected of him.
Mendy, though, has been a steady presence since taking over from Kepa. He has racked up clean sheets at a canter and is now only joint-second in the league in terms of shutouts, with 14.
The Senegal international has continued his form under Thomas Tuchel and is effectively the first-choice keeper for us.
Given the season Szczesny is having at Juve, one could say we dodged a small bullet.
Mendy has been a smart investment despite this being his first season in England. It remains to be seen if Chelsea go after another keeper like Donnarumma given their interest in the AC Milan prodigy.
