Speaking to the official club media, Chelsea full-back Reece James revealed that it has taken some time to get used to the fluid football that Thomas Tuchel has introduced at the club.
The German gaffer took over from Frank Lampard in January after a string of poor results. And he has changed Chelsea’s fortunes since as the club is yet to lose a single game in his reign so far.
One of the biggest changes Tuchel has made has been the visible shift in the formation. Instead of a 4-man backline, Chelsea now play with three centre-backs and two wing-backs.
While Marcos Alonso and Ben Chilwell compete for a spot down the left-hand side, Reece James is a more trusted option down the right-hand side. The 21-year-old has appeared in all but one league game under Tuchel.
Chelsea’s fluid system under their new boss sees right centre-back Cesar Azpilicueta often overlap the right wing-back. James says that this is something that has taken time to get used to.
“Yeah, it’s taken a little bit of getting used to, to be fair. I’m not used to my centre-backs running past me, but I’ve played enough and it’s become normal now.”
He also lauded the Spanish veteran for his experience and ability on the pitch. Azpilicueta joined Chelsea in 2012 and the 31-year-old has been a regular fixture in the Blues’ defence since then.
“Playing in front of him [Azpi] is great and knowing I’ve got him behind me is a very good feeling as well. I always feel safe and secure on the pitch… He’s always been supporting and helping and guiding me and he still does that now.”
It is great to see the defensive duo gel together so well. A mix of youth and experience is necessary for any club to achieve big things and this is one combination that Chelsea would hope remains in their defence for a few more years.
