Lee Dixon believes lack of goals can hold back Chelsea in the Champions League

According to Metro, Lee Dixon believes the lack of goals from Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel could hold them back in the Champions League. Chelsea are set to take on Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their Round of 16 clash in the Champions League and they hold a slender one-goal lead.

Chelsea have now gone 11 games unbeaten under Thomas Tuchel and won 8 of them. One visible aspect has been the defensive solidity we have seen from the Blues since Tuchel took over.

The German manager has reverted to a back-three and used wing-backs. That has allowed them to keep a compact shape through the games.

However, it was only against Everton that Chelsea won by a two-goal margin. The rest have all been close victories with a one-goal margin. That has led former Arsenal defender Dixon to speak out on the issue.

‘I think Thomas Tuchel has a team playing in a way they enjoy – there’s an enthusiasm and competition for places. He is demanding performances that are sneaking out results.

He hasn’t had a multitude of goals and that might be something that holds them back in the Champions League, but they have a solid look about them. The pattern of play suits them.’

Dixon does have a point, with Chelsea adopting a more defensive approach under Tuchel. They have scored goals but not at a free rate. Their top scorers this season have been Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud.

While that’s not all bad, Chelsea could do with some more goals from their frontmen or creative players.
