Youth coach Joe Cole states Chelsea need to sanction Erling Haaland transfer to become title contenders
Speaking to BT Sport (h/t Express) after the draw against Leeds United, Chelsea youth coach Joe Cole stated that Erling Haaland is on the transfer wish-list of the Blues.
Thomas Tuchel’s team has been frequently linked with a move for the Borussia Dortmund star, and Cole feels that a move for him would make Chelsea genuine title challengers.
“They need one player for me, Haaland. He’s on the wish-list. You just need that one sparkle of magic, that No.9, that focal point. And it will change this club getting back to the glory days of challenging for the title regularly.”
The Blues started with Kai Havertz as a false 9 against Leeds United. While they drew 0-0 and extended their unbeaten run under Tuchel to 12 games, their pattern of not finishing enough chances continued.
A new number 9?
Havertz blanked for the 16th Premier League game in a row. Werner, on the other hand, now has just one league goal in the last 20 league games.
And if that is compared to the statistics the Norwegian striker has been pulling in the Bundesliga, the difference becomes clear. He has 31 goals in 30 appearances for Dortmund this season. (h/t transfermarkt)
Cole’s comments are spot on as Chelsea do need to score more. Their defence seems to be sorted, with the team now having kept 5 clean sheets in a row in all competitions.
And Haaland would definitely be a great option. But the report states that the Blues may have to fend off competition from Manchester United, Manchester City, and Barcelona for the 20-year-old’s signature.

The striker is said to be available for around £100m. With Timo Werner not scoring a lot and Olivier Giroud turning 35 this year, signing a young talent like Haaland makes sense.
