Former Chelsea boss Lampard emerges as surprise candidate for England U-21 role

Frank Lampard emerges as surprise candidate for England U-21 boss

In a rather surprising bit of news from Mirror, former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has emerged as a candidate to be the next England U-21 manager. Current manager Aidy Boothroyd’s future has been called into question after a dismal start to England U-21’s Euro campaign.

Frank Lampard took charge of Chelsea in 2019 and a respectable 4th place finish meant that he was handed a host of talented signings for this season.

However, failure to get results in the league meant that Abramovich had to take a bit of a familiar action in sacking the club legend.

His successor Thomas Tuchel has made rapid improvements to the side as Chelsea look well and good now. However, Lampard might not have to stay out of a job too long and his next assignment could be for England U-21s.

The side are off to a horrid start in the U-21 Euros with two losses in the opening two games. While there is still a chance for qualification to the next round, they will need other results to go their way.

Nonetheless, concerns remain about Boothroyd given how the side are playing. With his contract set to end after the tournament, the FA could look for a change.

Lampard is a promising name to replace Boothroyd and even though he isn’t someone with too much experience, his work with young players at Derby and Chelsea are proof that he can work well with that age group.

The likes of Mount, Abraham, Tomori and Hudson-Odoi were all handed breakthroughs under the club icon. He could take charge of a similarly exciting unit with the U-21s.
