Ashley Cole has admitted that Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher has impressed him with his performances in recent years (h/t Football.london). He kept tabs on him since when he was a player at the club. The youngster is currently on loan at West Brom for the season.
Gallagher joined Chelsea’s academy as an 8-year-old and went on to progress through the youth teams, ultimately signing his first professional contract in 2018. Since then, he has gone out on loan to Charlton and Swansea where he impressed.
Even this season, Gallagher was allowed to leave on loan as newly-promoted West Brom came for him. Despite the doom and gloom surrounding the Baggies, Gallagher has been one of their best players this season. And, former Chelsea defender Cole believes that Gallagher has proven his worth since coming out of the academy.
“His first loan spell at Charlton was very successful and then he followed that up with a great experience at Swansea. I feel now that he’s been a very important player for West Brom. I saw him as a very young kid at Chelsea and if I’m honest, was he technically gifted like the other players in the group?
“Probably not, but he just shows that his hard work, dedication, that attitude he has, it just proves what he’s doing now. It’s an opportunity, you sometimes have to step out of that bubble at Chelsea and really go and fight somewhere else. He’s done that and proved his worth.”
The Chelsea youngster has come a long way from his academy days. He has impressed in each of his loan spells. While Chelsea may have a huge stock of midfielders already in the side, Gallagher will be hoping that he gets to return to Chelsea and make his debut for the senior side soon.
