According to The Sun, Chelsea are set to start talks over a free transfer for AC Milan superstar Gianluigi Donnarumma. They have begun talks with his agent, Mino Raiola about a transfer next season. Manchester United are also said to be after the goalkeeper.
Donnarumma is yet to agree on a contract extension with his current deal set to expire at the end of this season. It could be the case that he eventually signs a new contract but the fact that it has dragged on for this long with just a few months left, means that sides like Man United and Chelsea are on the edge and waiting to snap him up.
It has been said that contract talks between the player and club have stalled in recent weeks due to his wage demands. While Edouard Mendy is the first-choice, for now, a move for Donnarumma would make him the first choice for the next 8-10 years.
Chelsea could look to sign the keeper despite needing players in other positions such as centre-back and striker. Another big question would be the future of Kepa Arrizabalaga if Donnarumma arrives.
Chelsea have thrown big money on keepers in the last few seasons with Kepa and Edouard Mendy arriving at the Bridge. However, a lot will depend on what happens between now and the end of the season. Chelsea could try and pip Manchester United to Donnarumma’s signature.
