Talking on Match of the Day (h/t football.london), Alan Shearer implied that Kai Havertz was one of the main reasons why Chelsea did not score against Leeds United on Saturday.
The Blues faced Marcelo Bielsa’s men this weekend in the Premier League. The game finished as a goalless draw and Chelsea extended their unbeaten run to 12 games under Thomas Tuchel.
It also meant 5 clean sheets in a row in all competitions for Chelsea. But the problem lied up front as the Blues continued their trend of missing a lot of chances.
Summer signing Havertz started as a false-nine, a position Tuchel said he wanted to start the German midfielder in a few days back. And Olivier Giroud and Timo Werner were left out of the starting XI.
But the Newcastle legend says that there was one thing that the former Bayer Leverkusen playmaker constantly kept getting wrong; his positioning.
“Tuchel said there about him (Havertz) getting forward and making runs into the box, he didn’t quite do that, certainly in the first half, because if he had had, he’d have 2 or 3 tap-ins. Yes, they played well, yes, they got into positions but they certainly weren’t clinical enough.”
Shearer then added that the German must improve his positioning if he wanted to start more in this position under Tuchel. Havertz has now blanked for 16 league games in a row.
“If he is going to play in that position that the manager wants him to, then he’s got to get into better positions.”
The former Magpies frontman would certainly know what he is talking about and Havertz could stand to learn from his advice. The pundit had 260 Premier League goals in his playing days, which is still a record in the league.
