Speaking before the Premier League game against Newcastle United (h/t Football.london), Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel stated his belief in Kai Havertz to have a ‘big impact’ at the club.
Havertz signed for a transfer fee of up to £71million in the summer. Before his switch to England, the German playmaker was scoring and assisting for fun in the Bundesliga.
He scored 29 league goals in his last two seasons in Germany. That form has evaded him this season, as he has just 1 goal and 3 assists for Chelsea so far. (h/t Transfermarkt)
The 21-year-old had a decent start to his career at Stamford Bridge. However, a bout with Covid-19 saw his fitness and form take a hit.
But Tuchel believes that adjusting to a new environment is difficult for a youngster and that he backs Havertz to recreate his Leverkusen form in London.
“It takes its time and there is no short answer. What we know, what we can rely on, is that all this potential is in him… Sometimes players need a little more time to adapt…”
Havertz is currently unfit and missed the last 3 matches for the Blues. He is also expected to be unavailable for the Premier League clash against the Magpies on Monday.
Tuchel, however, is optimistic about the versatile midfielder. He hopes that Havertz re-joins the training sessions soon because he expects the German international to have a big impact at Stamford Bridge.
“Hopefully, he can come back in the next few days because I am convinced he will have a big impact at this club.”
These reassuring words from Tuchel are synonymous with what Frank Lampard spoke of the youngster during his time in charge. This is Havertz’s first season in England and Tuchel is right to ask for patience from the fans.
