According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is worried that striker Tammy Abraham is set for a spell on the sidelines.
This comes after the 23-year-old was subjected to a rough tackle by Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles. He appeared to injure his ankle and was promptly taken off in the 20th minute.
The club’s other two strikers, Olivier Giroud and Timo Werner stepped up and ensured that the Blues overtook Liverpool in the fourth spot with a 2-0 win.
Despite the crunching tackle, Lascelles went unpunished as he had won the ball. A visibly annoyed Tuchel and his assistant showed referee Peter Bankes a replay of the incident at the half-time interval.
The Chelsea boss admitted that there is no update yet on Abraham’s injury. He is, however, worried that good news could come at a premium. The German remains adamant that Lascelles’ tackle was reckless despite him having played the ball.
“It is a worry because we had to take him off so early after a hard tackle. We are worried but there is no news. We had the feeling that it was a reckless tackle. He played the ball, yes, but for me, it was too much because you risk the injury of an opponent and for me, it was a foul.”
Abraham is Chelsea’s top scorer this season with 12 strikes. His absence especially at such an important juncture in the season will be a blow to our aspirations.
Hopefully, the injury will not be as bad as feared and he will make a swift return. Until then, the onus will be on Giroud and Werner to step up and prove their credentials.
Tuchel’s concerns regarding the tackle are valid. Despite playing the ball, the tackle was rough enough to injure a player. The referee should have taken an objective look at the incident than focus on the mere details.
