Chelsea star reveals he was worried about the club’s top-four chances under Lampard

Werner reveals he was worried about Chelsea top-four chances under Lampard

Timo Werner has admitted that he was concerned Chelsea would struggle to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League under former manager Frank Lampard. (h/t Football London)

The German international has, however, hailed Lampard’s successor, Thomas Tuchel, for bringing about a positive change at the club. Werner feels that the Blues are back in good shape under his compatriot and have their sights firmly set on a Champions League spot at the end of the season.

After the 2-1 win over Sheffield United, Werner told Chelsea’s 5th Stand app (h/t Football London):

“If we go back three or four matches, when the manager was not yet, we were nine or ten points behind the top four.

“We watched the table and were like, ‘oh, it might not be so good at the end of the season’. Now we are really good, back in shape, and I think if we keep going like this we can put more pressure on the other teams.”

Chelsea made a blistering start to the campaign under Lampard’s stewardship and went top of the table after beating Leeds United at the start of December. However, the Blues suffered a significant downturn in form thereafter, losing five of their following eight games in the Premier League.

The club’s dismal run of form eventually culminated in them parting company with Lampard last month with the Blues languishing 9th in the standings. While it’s never a pleasing sight to witness a club legend facing the sack, Tuchel’s instant impact it sure to have endeared him to the hearts of the fans.

After kicking off his reign at Stamford Bridge with a drab goalless draw against Wolves, Tuchel has guided Chelsea to three consecutive wins over Burnley, Tottenham and Sheffield United in the PL.

As a result, the Blues have climbed up to 5th in the standings and are now just a point adrift of 4th-placed Liverpool.

Werner, though, is yet to hit the ground running following the appointment of Tuchel. The 24-year-old drew a complete blank in the win over Sheffield United, extending his goal drought to 14 games in the PL.
