Thomas Tuchel gives latest Chelsea team news ahead of Tottenham Hotspur clash in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

Thiago Silva to discuss Chelsea contract extension in coming weeks

According to reliable journalist, Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Thiago Silva is set to discuss a one-year extension on his current stay at Chelsea.

The Brazilian veteran joined the club on a free transfer last summer and has immediately emerged as the Blues’ leader at the back. Despite being 36, his experience has shone through making him a vocal and dependable presence in the Chelsea rearguard.

Silva initially joined Chelsea on a one-year deal, with an option for a one-year extension. As things stand he has more than shown enough to suggest he has it in him to perform at the highest level for at least another year.

The Chelsea board, for their part, are happy with the player. New manager Thomas Tuchel, who also managed the player at PSG, is well aware of his strengths and believes he is a great leader.

While there is no hurry to rush the deal, there appears to be a belief that an agreement can be reached on. The final decision will, however, lie with the player, as it should.

Tuchel appears keen to strengthen the Chelsea backline in the summer. At 36, Silva is not a long-term option, but his experience and defensive nous can help nurture the youngsters at the club.
