Report – Tuchel’s contract is performance-based as Chelsea look to save money

Thomas Tuchel has a performance-based contract at Chelsea that has clauses to trigger an extension

A report by Daily Mail confirms that Thomas Tuchel has been offered a performance-based contract at Chelsea as a way of stopping the club spending amounts to compensate sacked managers.

The German’s contract has performance-based incentives that would trigger an option to extend his stay. That means he may well stay beyond his 18-month contract at Stamford Bridge is he continues to perform well.

One of these clauses includes Chelsea qualifying for the UEFA Champions League in the next two seasons. Roman Abramovich would want his club amongst Europe’s elites, and Tuchel would understand that.

Thomas Tuchel says he was initially taken aback by the length of the Chelsea contract.

The former PSG boss even explained that the initial contract of 18 months confused him. However, he understood that the duration made little difference as the club could sack him whenever they wanted to anyway.

“At first it was a concern. But after only one minute I thought, ‘What does it change?’ What does it change if they give me four and a half years? They could sack me anyway.”

A plot to save money

The manager was appointed a day after Frank Lampard was sacked as Chelsea boss. Chelsea also contacted Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick, but Tuchel was the preferred candidate all along.

Thomas Tuchel took over from Frank Lampard.

He was in two minds over joining the Blues mid-season. However, the club indicated that the job might not be available at the end of the season, thus convincing him to join. (h/t Daily Mail)

Chelsea have paid a total of £110million to sacked managers as compensation since Abramovich’s appointment. Lampard’s sacking would not hit the club too hard as they only have to pay him until the season’s end.

Nevertheless, the Russian owner’s move towards a performance-based contract showcases a desire by the club to save some money when they do take the call to sack their manager.
