According to a recent survey conducted by the CIES Football Observatory, Chelsea have been the highest earners in the transfer market among all Premier League clubs since the summer of 2016.
The Swiss-based research organisation has revealed that Chelsea have earned as much as €660million from player sales, the most by any club in the English top-flight over that period. Liverpool are second in terms of revenue collected from player sales, with €474million transfer income.
The departure of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid remains Chelsea’s most lucrative sale in the market over the past few years. Atletico Madrid paid a staggering £58.3million to sign Alvaro Morata while Diego Costa also rejoined the Rojiblancos in a £57million deal back in the summer of 2017.
Indeed, those three sales have accounted for almost one-third of the Blues’ transfer income in recent times. However, the report adds that Chelsea have also spent a staggering €968million over the past five years, the second-most by any club in England and fourth-highest in entire Europe.
Almost one-fourth of that outlay came this past summer as Abramovich forked out in excess of £200million after facing a transfer ban due to breach of FIFA regulations back in 2019.
Only Man City have spent more money, just over €1billion, in the transfer market over that specified period of time. Hence, despite enhancing their reputation as the best selling club in the PL, Chelsea have still spent €308million more than what they have earned, the fifth-highest figure in England and ninth in Europe.
Interestingly, Man City, Man United, Everton and Aston Villa have all recorded a bigger negative net spending than Chelsea. The report adds that no Premier League club have recorded a positive transfer balance during the period.
