Reece James backs Timo Werner to regain his goalscoring form
Chelsea right-back Reece James has backed his teammate, Timo Werner, to get back to scoring ways as the German international continues to struggle for goals at Stamford Bridge.
The 24-year-old won the man-of-the-match award in the Blues’ recent 2-1 win over Sheffield United. Werner provided the assist for Mason Mount’s opener and won the penalty that led to Jorginho’s goal as Chelsea registered their third win in four games under new manager Thomas Tuchel.
However, Werner failed to find the back of the net again, extending his barren run in front of goal to 14 games in the Premier League. The German talisman was among the most prolific forwards in Europe last season as he struck 34 goals for RB Leipzig in all competitions.
But he has been unable to replicate that form since his £47.5million switch to West London this past summer. James, though, is confident that Werner is on the cusp of returning to his prolific self in the coming weeks. Speaking to Chelsea’s official website (h/t Metro), he said:
“His time is coming.
“He is working very hard and he was involved in two goals so it is not like he is not contributing. Two of his contributions helped get the win.”
Werner enjoyed a promising start to life at Stamford Bridge earlier in the campaign. He raced to 8 goals in all competitions heading into December but has suffered a drastic downturn in form over the past couple of months.
The 24-year-old has netted just once in his last 19 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions, with that strike coming against Morecambe in the FA cup.
Werner has shown signs of returning to his best under new manager Tuchel, who has utilised his compatriot in a more central No.10 role than rather a lone forward up top.
