A report by Spanish outlet SPORT (h/t Express) reveals that Chelsea transfer target Ousmane Dembele wants to stay put at Barcelona in the summer.
The winger has been linked to Chelsea as well as Manchester United. Both clubs are keen to make a move for the Frenchman in the summer.
Those plans, however, could be spoilt, as Dembele has apparently made it clear to Barcelona that he wants to stay and sign a new contract. (h/t Express)
The news of Barcelona wanting to sell him in the summer arose from his contract running out soon. He signed for the club in 2017 for a £117m free from Borussia Dortmund, and his current contract expires in 2022.
If his contract is not renewed by this time next year, the club could lose him to a free transfer at the end of his contract. This led to the Catalans considering the possibility of cashing in on him this summer itself. Both United and Chelsea are said to be monitoring this situation closely. (h/t Express)
Another club in the running for the former Dortmund winger are Serie A champions Juventus, who would be willing to offer a big salary package.
Barcelona officials are apparently concerned about the winger’s form at the club. He has started just 8 out of the club’s 19 La Liga games this season so far. (h/t Express)
Chelsea did sign the likes of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, and Kai Havertz to add to an already impressive attacking line. But it cannot be denied that Dembele would add immense quality and depth to the team’s attack.
It should not be the end of the world for the Blues if they miss out on a move for him. The club has excellent forwards and young attackers such as Callum Hudson-Odoi already in their ranks.
