Jamie Carragher compares Timo Werner to Thierry Henry after Newcastle win

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher went on to compare Timo Werner of Chelsea to the great Thierry Henry (h/t Football.london). Post Chelsea’s win over Newcastle, Carragher was full of praise for Werner and said that his positioning was similar to that of Arsenal legend Henry.

Timo Werner finally got on the score sheet after 15 league games and 100 days. He went on to produce a stunning display with a goal and an assist that won Chelsea the game. The former Leipzig man has been under the spotlight ever since his big-money move to Chelsea.

He struggled massively to replicate his form from his Leipzig days under Frank Lampard. However, the German has shown signs of improvement under new manager Thomas Tuchel which should ease some of the pressure on him.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher pointed out how Werner kept drifting to and from between the left and central positions much like Thierry Henry.

You see his touch map and you think of Werner from Leipzig, he was almost in that Thierry Henry role – I’m obviously not linking him to Henry in terms of ability just yet – but that position just on the inside left, he wants to make runs there, he wants to get the ball there.

Werner is now playing a much different role under Tuchel to what he did under Lampard. Under the Chelsea legend, he played more of a wider role while now he plays somewhat of an advanced midfielder role with the freedom to move forward or out wide.

Even Thomas Tuchel was impressed with Werner’s contribution in the game. He said that Werner was important for his side and that he deserved the goal. On his positioning, Tuchel felt that he performs best when he is drifting out wide and using his speed.
