According to Fabrizio Romano on the Here We Go Podcast (h/t Simon Phillips on Twitter), Chelsea have Bayern Munich star Jerome Boateng on their radar but are yet to reach an agreement to bring the defender to Stamford Bridge next summer.
Spanish outlet Todofichajes (h/t Football.London) recently reported that the Blues have already reached an agreement with Boateng’s agent over a potential free transfer at the end of the season.
However, Romano has played down such speculations, although the insider has confirmed that Thomas Tuchel’s side are looking at the veteran.
The 32-year-old started his career with Hertha Berlin and Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga before spending a season at Man City in the Premier League.
Boateng returned to his homeland with Bayern Munich in 2011 and has since established himself as one of the best central defenders across the continent.
Boateng’s illustrious decade-long spell at the Allianz Arena has seen him win nine Bundesliga titles and two UEFA Champions League crowns. The vastly-experienced former 76-cap German international has played close to 350 times for the Bavarian giants.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s pursuit of a new centre-back has been well documented since the appointment of Thomas Tuchel at the helm.
The Blues have been linked with a host of defenders from the Bundesliga, including Niklas Sule, Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate. Real Madrid star Raphael Varane is also understood to be on the club’s radar.
The long-term futures of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger in West London remain up in the air. Both players are set to enter the final 12 months of their contract. Fikayo Tomori has impressed on loan at AC Milan.
Chelsea have had great success with the acquisition of Thiago Silva on a free transfer this past summer. A potential deal for Jerome Boateng would, therefore, see the Blues repeat a similar trick to add another world-class centre-back to their ranks.
The 22-year-old made a top class performance and marked an assist in Chelsea's 3-0 win against West Ham.
