Frank Lampard praised for signing Thiago Silva by Sami Khedira
Speaking in an interview with The Athletic (subscription required), Juventus midfield star Sami Khedira has lavished praise on Chelsea manager Frank Lampard for signing Thiago Silva in the summer.
The 36-year-old Silva arrived at Chelsea this past summer, signing on a free transfer after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired.
Since coming in, the Brazilian has had a great effect on the team’s fortunes, as he has helped Chelsea become more solid at the back. Silva has forged a strong partnership with Kurt Zouma and has easily been one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League this term, despite his age.
And Khedira has lauded Lampard for signing the veteran star, insisting that it is important that the squad has a balance of youth and experience.
“Take Frank Lampard. In Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, he’s brought in two outstanding footballers but the key signing is Thiago Silva at the age of 36. Lampard knows that it’s not enough to have players who run fast and shoot hard.
“You also need guys with experience that help others perform by force of their presence and personality. A good manager sees the bigger picture and understands what pieces are missing to complete the puzzle.”

Since joining, Silva has made 15 appearances for Chelsea, helping the club to seven clean sheets. The veteran defender has also chipped in with two goals as well. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Having signed him on a year-long contract, Chelsea do retain the option of extending his deal by another twelve months. Judging by the impact he has made already, it wouldn’t be a surpise to see the club trigger that option.
