As reported by the Express, former Manchester United captain and Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane has hit out at Chelsea star Mason Mount following the Blues 3-1 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.
First-half goals from Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne were enough for Pep Guardiola’s side to pick up a win, with Callum Hudson-Odoi scoring a late consolation for the hosts.
Chelsea put in a poor performance, as Manchester City exerted their dominance on Frank Lampard’s players all through the game. And Keane has hit out at the mentality of the team, particularly picking out Mount for his lack of effort in the build-up to City’s first goal.
“A centre-half has got to do better but Mason Mount is watching. He’s got to put a challenge in. He’s got to put his foot in and make a sacrifice. Tackle! Tackle somebody.
“When you are out of possession, football is, you’ve got to be aggressive. To be fair, I think that reflected Chelsea’s whole team performance.”
Fellow pundit Graeme Souness agreed with Keane’s assessment but claimed that the midfielder might have been held back by the scare of giving away a penalty.
“I’m with you, I think we are quite similar. I’m thinking ‘go on then, make some sort of effort’. I like Mason Mount, but I think he is worried about giving a penalty away, like they all are today.”
It was a disappointing performance across the board, with none of the players coming out with credit, with substitutes Hudson-Odoi and Billy Gilmour being the exceptions.
Chelsea have now won just once in the last six league games. And everyone, including Mount who has been a consistent performer for us this term, will need to pull their socks up and bounce back strongly.
