Speaking to Stadium Astro (h/t Express), former Chelsea defender Robert Huth launched a scathing attack on Kai Havertz for his work-rate off the ball, and blamed the Blues dressing room for being ‘too nice’ to him.
Havertz has just 1 goal and 3 assists in his 16 Premier League appearances so far this season. He has also blanked in his last 12 league games. (h/t Transfermarkt)
These are certainly not the numbers that Frank Lampard would have expected from the German playmaker when Chelsea paid £72m to sign him from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.
And, Huth says that the reason Havertz is finding it hard in England is that he is a “lightweight” whose body language he does not like “at all”.
“I just don’t like his body language at all, he looks a bit lightweight.”
Huth says that Havertz seems like he is not “bothered at times” as he loses the ball and doesn’t put the effort to win it back.
Adding to that, the former Leicester City centre-back compares Havertz’s situation to Riyad Mahrez. He said that the Foxes dressing room took care of him after making him understand that he has to work off the ball too.
“Maybe Chelsea lack that internal leader or leaders where that conversation happens.”
Huth states that Havertz needs to be told to improve off the ball by his teammates, and then goes on to blame the Chelsea dressing who he believes are too nice with the 21-year-old.
“He needs someone to tell him what it takes to play in the Premier League. Maybe the whole changing room is a little bit too nice.”
Havertz would now be hoping that he could get his season back on track. Chelsea face Luton Town in the FA Cup this weekend, before taking on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Wednesday.
