The role played by Petr Cech in Frank Lampard sacking from Chelsea job
According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Petr Cech was placed in an unenviable position leading up to the sacking of Frank Lampard as Chelsea boss.
The Blues boss was dismissed after 18 months in charge following a series of just three wins in 10 Premier League games. This abject run saw the Blues cede ground in the title race.
Cech isn’t just the Chelsea technical director but has also been registered as a player. This saw him being put in charge of canvassing player opinion on the manager.
The 38-year-old was then tasked with reporting his findings to club chief Marina Granovskaia. While Cech’s report isn’t the sole reason for Lampard’s sacking, it brought to light that some players were disillusioned by his methods.
As someone who has played for Chelsea, Lampard would have been well aware of the noose hanging around his neck. Roman Abramovich is not to suffer fools and has a reputation for being trigger happy.
Despite being a club legend, Lampard’s fate was unlike any other manager who also struggled at the Bridge.
It would be unwise to suggest that Cech had any intent to get Lampard dismissed. The former goalkeeper was just doing his job rather than protect his former teammate.
The fact that he could do it well by putting aside any feelings of bias is a testament to his professionalism and commitment to the club. There would be no reason to doubt his intentions for the club or for Lampard.
