Records tumble as Chelsea promise much in Thomas Tuchel’s first game in charge

Thomas Tuchel took charge of Chelsea for the first time yesterday as the Blues faced off against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge.

While we may not have secured all three points, the players did manage to break two Premier League records. The Tuchel era has in all earnestness started off with a bang.

According to The Daily Star, Chelsea recorded the highest amount of possession (78.9%) and most passes (820) ever seen in a new manager’s first Premier League match.

Chelsea dominated large parts of the play and had a number of chances. However, not many of them can be termed clear-cut given our lack of cohesion in the final third.

Starting off in a fluid 3-4-2-1 system, Chelsea passed the ball well and enjoyed ridiculous amounts of possession. A tactically adept manager, Tuchel will have liked what he saw on the field.

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day (h/t Daily Star), the German boss praised the attitude and intensity his team brought onto the field.

I enjoyed it a lot because I was very happy with the intensity, the attitude, energy and quality of my team, we were well organised, had a lot of ball recoveries in the last third, never lacked intensity

Tuchel remains optimistic that the results will come if Chelsea keep up their performance levels. A committed coach, the 47-year-old took his first training session just hours after being officially unveiled.

Tuchel has initially signed with the club on an 18-month deal. The tools are available for him to succeed at the club. How the German goes about doing it remains to be seen.
