Peter Bosz questions Frank Lampard’s plans for Kai Havertz

Speaking to The Athletic (Subscription required), Peter Bosz is baffled at how Frank Lampard intends to make use of Kai Havertz at Chelsea.

Having managed the German ace at Bayer Leverkusen, Bosz is well aware of the player’s strengths and abilities. Havertz was Chelsea’s biggest capture of the summer costing a mammoth £70million.

Despite already having scored a hat-trick in Blue, the 21-year-old has largely looked out of sorts at the Bridge.

Does Frank Lampard have an idea of how to deploy Kai Havertz?

Havertz has made 21 appearances for Chelsea so far, 15 of which have come as a starter. During this time, he has scored four goals and five assists. While his numbers aren’t too shabby, they do gloss over some truly poor performances. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Bosz believes Havertz has struggled due to Lampard’s lack of a clear idea on how to deploy him.

“As for Kai, I can see why Chelsea brought him in but I cannot yet see the exact idea Frank Lampard has for him.”

While the Leverkusen boss praised Lampard for his public backing of the player, he is baffled at the lack of game time afforded of late to Havertz.

“For a €100 million transfer you must play, and he isn’t.”

Jack of all trades, master of none!

Bosz’s comments are not without merit. The Dutchman deployed Havertz as a false-9 at Leverkusen to great effect.

While versatility is often a boon, in Havertz’s case, it is proving a curse. He has been deployed in at least three different positions without getting a regular run in any spot.

It is never easy to move to a new country and hit the ground running, especially at a young age. The lack of clarity regarding his role in the team would make it all the harder for Havertz.

Confidence is a key factor and hopefully, Havertz will show the spirit to come out of his slump. The last thing the Blues need is yet another promising yet expensive signing go for a flop.

While it is well and good to support him off the pitch, Lampard has to get Havertz firing. His job may just depend on it.
