Speaking after the 3-1 win against Luton Town (Football.london), Chelsea manager Frank Lampard came to the defence of star striker Timo Werner and empathized after his missed penalty.
Chelsea were 2-0 up by the 17th minute as Tammy Abraham scored a quick-fire brace. However, a Kepa Arrizabalaga error meant that Luton were back in the game around the half-hour mark.
Abraham completed his hat-trick in the 74th minute to ease some pressure off the Blues. And the stage was set for Timo Werner to bag a goal for his impressive performance after he was brought down in the 85th minute.
The German stepped up to the spot but his penalty was saved by Luton goalkeeper Simon Sluga. The former RB Leipzig striker looked to the heavens in despair at full-time as his miserable run continued.
The penalty miss means that the £47million summer signing now has just one goal in 16 matches for Chelsea. His solitary goal during that time came against fourth-tier side Morecambe.
But Lampard empathized with the German after the match and said that he knows how missing a penalty feels like.
“When it’s not going for you, it can happen. I missed penalties, I know the feeling.”
Lampard added that he was disappointed for Werner but asked the German not too ponder too much about the miss. The former Derby County boss said that the team will help him get back up.
“With Timo I’m disappointed for him… It’s my job and his teammates’ job to lift him and he will be fine.”
Werner had a goal ruled out for offside against Leicester last week and his misery was compounded by this penalty miss. He would now hope that he breaks his Premier League duck when Chelsea face Wolves on Wednesday.
