According to Football.london, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has confirmed that defender Fikayo Tomori could leave the club on loan in January in search of regular game-time.
The 23-year-old Chelsea academy product had been a regular in the starting lineup early in Lampard’s tenure at the Bridge. However, over the past 12 months, Tomori’s game-time has reduced drastically.
In fact, the England international has featured just four times across all competitions this season, totalling up to 234 minutes of on-field action. Given his lack of playing time, speculations have been rife that the defender is seeking an exit from Chelsea.
Now, Lampard has admitted that Tomori could be set for a temporary loan spell away from the Bridge in the second half of the season.
“The situation with Fikayo is open at the moment. There is a possibility he could be going on loan to get games somewhere else. So that would have to be the solution for him and the club. That was part of my thinking of not starting him today.”
Lampard also went on to praise the 23-year-old’s attitude and application in training, despite his current situation at Chelsea.
“But his attitude, even though he hasn’t played much recently, has been fantastic in training and in how he is.”
Having come through the youth ranks at the club, Tomori has had three loan spells away at Brighton, Hull City and Derby County, the latest coming under Lampard himself.
With the manager admitting that he could be allowed to leave, it will be interesting to see where Tomori ends up. The experience will serve him well in the long run.
