Speaking to Sky Sports (h/t Daily Mail) ahead of their match against Chelsea, Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan put his faith in Timo Werner and Kai Havertz to come good in the future.

Chelsea signed the duo in the summer but they are yet to make a case for their large transfer fee. Timo Werner, who was signed for £53m on a £175,000-a-week contract, has scored just 4 goals so far this season.

His current run of 11 games without a goal is in start contrast to his last season at RB Leipzig where he netted 28 times. The other Bundesliga starlet signed by Chelsea, Kai Havertz, is doing no better.

The 21-year-old has not been involved in a goal for the club in his last 9 league games. He has also not provided an assist for over 3 months, which is not what the club would have expected from a £71m signing.

Patience is the name of the game

However, Ilkay Gundogan believes that the time that the duo is taking to settle in at Chelsea is normal. Gundogan himself moved from the Bundesliga to the Premier League and understands their situation.

“I think it’s quite normal that they are struggling a little bit…”

The City midfielder acknowledges the struggle involved in adjusting in a new team. Moreover, he says that the current situation of the Covid-19 pandemic and the congested fixture list has made it a bit more difficult.

“It’s not easy to adapt quickly to the Premier League when you come from a different country and now, with the situation going on, I think it’s just even harder.”

Gundogan, who has played in the German national team with the Chelsea duo, trusts them to come good sooner rather than later. He says they possess “incredible talent” which they will be able to show in the league.
