According to the Metro, Ian Wright has told Chelsea striker Timo Werner that perseverance is the key to him overcoming his recent struggles in front of goal.
Brought in for big money in the summer, the 24-year-old initially impressed with his vision and movement. The confidence has all but evaporated and he has failed to find the back of the net like he did at RB Leipzig.
Werner has scored just once in the last 17 games and looks shorn of belief. He had the opportunity to score from the penalty spot against Luton Town but contrived to miss.
Apart from the miss, Werner had a solid game where he showed much promise. However, strikers are judged by the goals they score and it is the one thing the German is missing at the moment.
Wright, an accomplished scorer during his playing days, believes Werner has to keep at it. He believes Werner should show more confidence to put away chances that come easy.
“You have to keep getting in there, saying I’ll take that penalty you have to show that confidence and you’ve got to try and convert it.”
The Arsenal legend also hinted that an attempt in finesse made Werner’s penalty easier for the goalkeeper to stop. By angling the ball inwards Werner made it easier for Simon Sluga in the Luton goal to get a strong hand to it.
“That’s the problem when you take it like that and try to bend it in there and catch it like that it goes into the keeper.”
Another Premier League legend Alan Shearer too weighed in with his opinion. He believes Werner must practice more of close-ranged finishes to build up his confidence.
Signing Werner was seen as a real coup for Chelsea. While there have been flashes of brilliance, it has not stopped from his scoring touch going for a toss. Hopefully, the pendulum will now swing the other way for the remainder of the campaign.
With Thomas Tuchel set to take charge of Chelsea, Werner will have a German coach attempting to get the best out of him. The 47-year-old is an accomplished tactician who is known for getting the best out of his players.
Hopefully, Werner will start pulling his weight under the new boss in the games to come.
