Frank Lampard implies Timo Werner must put in a shift off the ball to keep Chelsea starting place
Speaking before the game against Fulham (h/t Evening Standard), Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has said that Timo Werner will need time to adjust to his ideas and that fans must be patient with the German striker.
Werner signed for Chelsea in the summer from RB Leipzig. The 24-year-old had a good start to his first season, but his form has slumped in the past few weeks.
He did break his long-standing goal-drought when he scored against Morecambe in the FA Cup, but he still without a goal in his last 9 Premier League matches.
But, Frank Lampard has still put his faith in him as Werner has already made 25 appearances for the club this season. Lampard, however, says that he wants his forwards to press off the ball.
“We are a good hard-working team off the ball, which means a lot of high pressure.”
Lampard is patient with Werner
He adds that it is understandable that Werner is taking time to acclimatize to his ideas as well as getting on the same wavelength as his teammates.
“It’s very normal for Timo and the other forward players who have come in that it will take some time to get used to my ideas.”
The Chelsea manager then discussed Werner’s best position. He stated that the former Leipzig striker prefers to start down the middle, but praised his versatility as he can also be deployed on the wings. (h/t Evening Standard)
The Blues now face Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday. Werner would be hoping that he scores what will be his 10th goal of the season.
