A View From The Bridge

Chelsea’s FA Cup third-round match expected to go ahead as per schedule amidst Covid concerns

Chelsea are set to face League Two side Morecambe in the FA Cup third round on Sunday

According to the Evening Standard, the FA Cup clash between Chelsea and Morecambe is expected to go ahead as per schedule.

This comes as the League Two side are set to return from their 10-day isolation on Wednesday. Morecambe have not seen action since Boxing Day.

The tie at Stamford Bridge was in doubt after the Shrimps tested positive for coronavirus. They are now expected to return to training on Wednesday provided their recent tests come out negative.

Morecambe were forced to postpone games against Bolton Wanderers and Bradford last week. This was in line with the EFL and government guidance to isolate players and staff.

As things stand, Morecambe manager Derek Adams is already preparing to take on Chelsea. The Morecambe players are expected to follow strict protocols in training. This includes turning up in their kits or having to change in their own cars.

According to the new FA Cup rules, if Morecambe cannot put together 14 players, the match will be postponed. In case the reschedule tie cannot be played before the fourth round, Chelsea will be awarded the match. (h/t The Mirror)

Any delay could hint at the Blues having to accommodate yet another match into what is a busy January. Going through with the original schedule or being given a bye will work to our benefit.

Coming on the back of a disappointing loss to Manchester City, the match against Morecambe gives Frank Lampard an excellent opportunity to return to winning ways.
