Transfer News: Chelsea yet to receive offers for this out-of-favour star

Chelsea struggling to find takers for Marcos Alonso

According to The Athletic (h/t Football.london), Chelsea is yet to receive an offer for out-of-favour defender Marcos Alonso.

The 30-year-old is a peripheral player at Stamford Bridge and is the club’s third-choice left-back behind Ben Chilwell and Emerson Palmieri. Alonso’s fall from grace occurred after his disagreement with Frank Lampard at The Hawthorns earlier this season.

He has not featured since and his prospects at the club look shaky at best. Chelsea, for their part, are keen to offload the player on a permanent basis.

Alonso has three years left on his current deal. The player has not made life easy for himself at the Bridge either.

He courted unneeded controversy by liking an Instagram post that attributed to a loss for Chelsea. This would have done little to endear himself to those in charge.

The Spaniard has attracted attention from European heavyweights Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid. However, both sides are keen on a loan deal which is something the Blues don’t prefer.

Alonso has registered 22 goals and 17 assists in 152 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions. A goal contribution once every 3.9 matches is not something to frown upon, especially for a full-back.

A move to Inter would have seen him reunite with Antonio Conte. The Italian used the defender in a 3-4-3 that made better use of his attacking traits.

Lampard, meanwhile, prefers to play four at the back, necessitating Alonso to be vigilant defensively. If anything it has helped underline the deficiencies in his game at the back.

The defender appears to have no future at Chelsea. The Blues believe they can secure £20m for the player’s services. As of yet, we have been unable to find a buyer who agrees with the price.

Alonso still has a number of years left in him. A parting of the ways could help him resurrect his career elsewhere.
