Arsenal legend urges Chelsea to strengthen this one position to turn into title challengers

Paul Merson urges Chelsea to sign a prolific striker

Speaking on Sky Sports (h/t Express), Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Chelsea can transform themselves into genuine title contenders if they land a prolific striker.

The Blues went big in the summer with German ace Timo Werner among their acquisitions. The 24-year-old has enjoyed a mixed start to his career in Blue and is currently going through a 12-game goal-drought

While Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud have proven themselves to be dependable backups, the club is lacking an out and out goalscorer to lead the line.

Merson does not believe that either Abraham or Giroud presents the Blues with an answer to their striking woes. With Werner largely playing on the left, he believes the club could do with another striker.

“I think Chelsea may have signed him to play as a striker, but that is not working, and if his best position is off the left, then Chelsea need a centre forward.”

Despite Abraham and Giroud holding their own, Merson believes they lack the quality to lead a title charge. He believes neither player has the ability to establish themselves as an infallible scorer.

“No disrespect to Olivier Giroud or Tammy Abraham, but you are not going to win the Premier League with those as your front two.”

Timo Werner has struggled to make an impact on the left wing

While having a dependable scorer does make life easy, it is far from a certainty that it can guarantee us the title. After all, Mohamed Salah and Luis Suarez both had record-breaking seasons with Liverpool only to come up short in the Premier League.

Werner has struggled to recreate his prolific performances for Leipzig. However, it is still his first season playing outside Germany and the youngster can still come good.

Giving up on him so soon would be foolhardy. The 24-year-old clearly is not lacking in talent. Given Giroud’s age, the Blues will need to bring in another striker in the coming windows. But dismissing the players already at the club would be a tad too shortsighted.
