Chelsea starlet set to stay put in January following injury setback to teammate

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard keen to prevent Fikayo Tomori from leaving on loan

According to The Sun (h/t Metro), Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has made a u-turn regarding the decision to loan out Fikayo Tomori this month.

The young defender has struggled for opportunities this season. With the January transfer window now open, he was keen to leave on loan or permanently in search of regular playtime.

While Lampard was open to the possibility of the 23-year-old leaving on loan, circumstances have now changed.

Chelsea to keep Fikayo Tomori rather than loan him out

An injury to Andreas Christensen has forced the boss’ hands with Tomori now set to stay put.

The Dane sustained a knee injury in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa and the club are anxiously awaiting results on the issue. It is feared that the defender is set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines.

Christensen has often served as the first choice backup to Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma. With him now potentially out of the picture, Lampard will have to turn to Tomori and Antonio Rudiger when needed.

Tomori could be set for a bigger role following Christense’s injury

Having been backed lavishly in the summer window, Chelsea are not expected to bring in defensive reinforcements this month.

This could potentially see Tomori once again get a look-in at the Bridge. With games coming thick and fast and given Silva’s age, it is not realistic to expect the Brazilian to start every game.

With Rudiger also considered expendable, Tomori might yet make a name for himself at the club this season.

Tomori’s situation had attracted attention from the likes of Leeds United and Newcastle United. As things stand, both teams will have to end up disappointed in their pursuit of the Englishman. (h/t Metro)
