According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Chelsea are on the lookout to replace Frank Lampard as the manager, with the club targeting someone who can speak the German language.
Lampard has been under pressure for some time now, with results not going his team’s way in the Premier League. The meek 2-0 defeat to Leicester City on Tuesday could prove to be the final nail in the coffin for the former midfielder.
Following the result, Chelsea have lost five of our last eight Premier League matches (D1 W2). We are now eighth in the league table, although crucially, we are just five points below the fourth spot.
However, Lampard’s future at the club is hanging by the thread, with the manager himself admitting that it was out of his hands following the Leicester defeat.
“It’s not my decision, that’s something that will always be there. You always understand some things are beyond your control. I keep talking about transition, but when you perform like that it’s normal that people ask questions.”
Former Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko has emerged as a contender for the job. But, as per The Athletic, the Blues are looking to bring in a manager that is fluent in German.
The reasoning behind such a move is the presence of marquee summer signings Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, neither of whom have settled in as expected at the Bridge as of yet.
In addition, the success of Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, coupled with the tactical clarity that German coaches tend to bring is something that has pushed Chelsea to look into that direction.
Some of the names being linked – Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick and Ralph Hasenhuttl speak German and more importantly, have worked with Timo Werner at RB Leipzig in the past.
It remains to be seen if Lampard remains at the helm or gets booted out, following the defeat to the Foxes.
