According to the reliable journalist, Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori will travel to Italy to complete his loan switch to AC Milan.
The Serie A giants were keen on securing the 23-year-old as a backup plan for Strasbourg defender Mohamed Simakan. With the Frenchman out injured, the Rossoneri have moved to sign Tomori.
The youngster has found opportunities difficult to come by at Chelsea. So far, he has made just four appearances and is the club’s fifth choice centre-back. A change of scenery will do him good.
With paper already signed, the transfer deal appears to be imminent. The medical will be held in Milan, following which Tomori will complete his move.
The deal will see him spend the remainder of the season at the San Siro. Milan do have the option to make the deal permanent for £25m.
Frank Lampard had earlier claimed that Tomori still had a future at Stamford Bridge. The option to buy casts a shadow on that statement.
There is no confirmation as to whether the option extends to an obligation. If not, then it gives Chelsea enough leeway if Tomori goes on to impress.
At 23, the defender is at an age where he should be playing regularly. The lack of opportunities this season has stunted his development at the Bridge. Hopefully, he will go on to have a fruitful latter half of the season.
Tomori will need to make full use of this opportunity to rekindle his development. He has been given a chance to impress and it remains to be seen what he does with it.
