According to Chelsea blogger Simon Phillips (h/t The Sun), Chelsea have entered into negotiations with AC Milan custodian Gianluigi Donnarumma over a potential transfer in the summer.
The 21-year-old, a product of the AC Milan youth academy, made his senior debut way back in 2015. Since then, he has grown into one of the best goalkeepers in Italy and has already amassed over 200 appearances for the club.
An ever-present in the starting XI, Donnarumma has started 13 of Milan’s 14 Serie A matches this season, playing a key role in their ascent to the top of the table.
However, his future In Lombardy has become a subject of uncertainty as his contract runs out at the end of the season. Talks over a new deal have been ongoing, with Milan putting forth an offer of £6m-a-year for the shot-stopper.
But, Donnarumma’s agent, Mino Raiola, is using contract offers from the likes of Inter Milan and Juventus to get a better deal for the goalkeeper. Amidst this, Chelsea, too, have entered the fray to try and sign him up next summer. (h/t The Sun)
Frank Lampard signed a new goalkeeper in the form of Edouard Mendy last summer. And, the Senegalese barring a couple of mistakes, has been a solid presence between the posts for us.
However, with Kepa Arrizabalaga still seemingly out of favour and Willy Caballero not getting any younger, the club should look to bring in another top-notch goalkeeper.
And, the possibility of signing someone as talented as Donnarumma on a free transfer doesn’t come along all too often. And, it is claimed that the Blues have already held talks with the Italian international over a possible move in the summer.
Mendy has certainly done quite well since coming in last summer. However, Donnarumma would certainly add more quality to our squad. Any deal, though, will depend on how his contract negotiations with Milan go.
