Chelsea hope to cut losses on £40million flop Danny Drinkwater with Bundesliga clubs interested
A report by German outlet Fussballtransfers (h/t Football.london) states that the representatives of Danny Drinkwater are touting his name to Bundesliga clubs in order to secure a move away from Chelsea.
Drinkwater has failed to live up to the expectations since he joined Chelsea in 2017. The midfielder, who set the Blues back by £40million, has just made league 5 starts for Chelsea.
This season is even worse for him. He is yet to play a single minute for Frank Lampard’s side, making 4 appearances for the U-23 team.
Amidst this, his name is linked with two a number of clubs for a January move. Schalke contacted the midfielder in November while FC Koln also showed interest in Drinkwater, whose contract expires in 2022.
Apart from this, clubs from America, Russia, and Turkey have also been linked with the midfielder. Chelsea are even willing to pay much of his wages in order to get a smaller club to get him on loan. (h/t Football.london)
Fall from grace
His career has really gone downhill in recent years. He was one of the main players in the Leicester City squad that won the Premier League back in 2016.
And now, he is struggling to get minutes at Chelsea. Frank Lampard can also not be blamed for this as Drinkwater had the chance to impress in his loan spells at Burnley and Aston Villa, but failed to do so.
Moreover, Chelsea have Jorginho, Matteo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, and Kai Havertz all fighting for minutes in midfield. It says a lot about the competition at Chelsea when a player like Ross Barkley is loaned out.

In the light of all this, it seems as if the best way to solve this situation for all parties would be to see the Englishman depart Stamford Bridge.
