Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori set to join AC Milan on loan
According to the reliable journalist, Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori is all set to join Italian giants AC Milan on loan.
The Serie A giants were keen on securing the 23-year-old if they failed to land Strasbourg defender Mohamed Simakan. The 20-year-old is also on Chelsea’s radar.
With RB Leipzig also now pursuing Simakan, competition for his signature has gotten tougher. Milan, meanwhile, appear to have settled for Tomori.
The defender has found opportunities difficult to come by at Chelsea. So far he has made just four appearances and is the club’s fifth choice centre-back.
He will now spend the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign at the San Siro. The Rossoneri are currently top of Serie A as they chase a first Scudetto since 2011. Playing regularly while winning trophies with the Italians is sure to rekindle Tomori’s development.
Milan also has an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season. They will have to fork out €30m to do that. There is, however, no obligation for them to do that.
Frank Lampard had earlier claimed that Tomori still had a future at Stamford Bridge. While the option to buy casts a shadow on that statement, the fact that there is no obligation leaves the door open in case he succeeds on loan.
Tomori, at 23, will need to step it up and show he has what it takes to succeed at the top level.
