Speaking on the Byline Podcast (h/t Express), failure to secure a top-four finish could prove to be the death knell for Frank Lampard at Chelsea.
A lavish summer saw the Blues make an assault for the Premier League title. However, a run of just one win in six has seen the Blues drop to the ninth spot.
This has seen Lampard’s position at the club come into question. While he will be given time to put things right, the Blues boss will need to finish in the top four to stay in charge, according to Marcotti.
“Frank Lampard’s job is safe and the board have faith that he can turn it around.”
A win on the last day of last season saw Chelsea qualify for this season’s Champions League. The Blues are set to face Atletico Madrid in the round of sixteen when the competition resumes in February.
With just seven points seperating the top ten sides, competition for the Champions League spots could go down to the wire this season. Lampard cannot afford to be complacent going into the second half of the season.
“If top four starts to look unlikely, then a change could be made.”
Lampard, for his part, is not afraid of the sack. This would suggest that the club has faith in his ability to turn things around.
Meanwhile, the rumour mill continues to churn out the names of Andriy Shevchenko, Max Allegri, and Thomas Tuchel as prospective replacements. (h/t Express)
The Blues take on Morecambe in the FA Cup followed by Fulham in the Premier League. Anything less than a win in both games will only crank up more pressure on Lampard.
As a player, Lampard came up trumps when faced with adversity. Still learning as a young manager, the Chelsea legend will now have to show that the job is not too big for his shoes.
