“They will sack me”: Tuchel knows he cannot take Chelsea job for granted

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel knows what is expected of him at the club

According to The Guardian, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is aware nothing less than success will save his job at the Bridge.

The 47-year-old took over from club legend Frank Lampard last Tuesday. The fact that a figure such as he can be fired, means Tuchel is unlikely to be given leeway if it gets to that.

The German boss has signed a 18-month contract which should give him enough time to showcase his abilities as a manager. After all Jose Mourinho is the only manager who lasted more than two years in charge of the club under Roman Abramovich.

“At first, it was a concern – a little bit like: ‘Oh, why 18 months?.”

Although Tuchel was initially taken aback by the short contract offer, he does not believes a longer commitment would have guaranteed his job.

“What does it change if they gave me four and a half years and they sack me anyway? If they are not happy, they will sack me anyway.”

Now that he has his head wrapped around it, the German boss is keen to embrace the challenge and prove himself. There is no dearth of ability and he also has a squad capable of competing against the best.

“I decided not to worry about that too much and to go to do it, to be brave enough to take this adventure. It’s my character to believe more in the chances than in the risks.”

More than trophies!

The expectation to win trophies is a given but Tuchel will also be tasked with getting the best out of Chelsea’s summer recruits. The likes of Kai Havertz and Timo Werner have both struggled to make an impact so far.

The Chelsea job is not an easy one and the high rate of attrition amongst elite managers shows just that. Tuchel was sacked by PSG just a month ago and at Chelsea, he has the right opportunity to rekindle his reputation.

The Chelsea job has proven to be the Waterloo for a number of top managers. Abramovich is a tough taskmaster who expects nothing but the best.

As one of the game’s foremost tactical minds, Tuchel’s ability will be put to the test. But then if he can succeed at the Bridge, he can do so anywhere else.
